The Challenge
Flexport, a SoftBank-backed unicorn, is on a mission to modernize global trade and logistics—but their subject matter can be dense, data-heavy, and visually uninspiring. As the company expanded into thought leadership, DEIB storytelling, and philanthropic initiatives, they needed an illustration system that could make these complex topics more accessible, human, and engaging.

My Role
As a senior in-house designer, I led the development of a wide range of illustrations that helped shape Flexport’s brand identity during a period of rapid growth. I collaborated cross-functionally with marketing, comms, and DEIB teams to concept and deliver visuals for event promotions, internal culture, community campaigns, and Flexport.org content.

Process Highlights

Designed a bold, modular visual system for State of Trade, a long-running webinar series hosted by Chief Economist Phil Levy. Each illustration was tailored to the topic while maintaining consistency across the series.
Created original artwork for Flexport.org’s sustainability and disaster relief programs—including spot and cover illustrations supporting carbon offset efforts and post-pandemic recovery.
Developed illustrations for DEIB initiatives celebrating cultural heritage months, equity in hiring, and internal values.
Designed limited-edition merch and internal swag (apparel, totes, posters) to build morale and foster connection during remote work years.
Established a consistent illustration style that balanced corporate clarity with a playful, editorial flair.

Outcome
These illustrations played a key role in making Flexport’s brand more approachable and relatable, helping to distinguish it from competitors in a traditionally dry industry. The work boosted campaign engagement, aided recruitment and retention efforts, and brought warmth and clarity to some of the company’s most mission-driven storytelling.
